Captured by renowned photographer Marianne Majerus, this modern courtyard garden in Clapham Town is the crowning gem of an extensive London house renovation.
Project Name: Clapham Courtyard
Studio Name: Mylandscapes LTD

(Budget £70k). With a hidden bar, Outdoor oven, Cedar screens, raised beds, fish pond, waterfall, 2 seating areas, abstract wall sculpture & bespoke powder-coated planters, a designer couldn’t pack more alfresco oomph into mere 50 square metres.

Shrunk in size due to a kitchen / living room extension, the square-shaped courtyard garden is split into 5 unique areas: Water feature rill and fish, lounge with an oven, dining, bar and a dry bed. Two thirds of the space is paved with basalt, the remainder is hardwood decking. The clients have equipped the courtyard niftily with contemporary furnishings & art. We selected a deep maroon colour for the water wall.

We designed tall curved vases featuring sleek upright Horsetails, planting borders, lighting system, roof terrace and front garden with exotic trees. A potted Tree Fern, Downy Japanese Maple, Wild ginger, Ferns, Silverbell tree & Yellow & Black Bamboos feature in the shaded zone cultivated in a raised bed, while Maori flax, Spurge, Mexican lily, Sotol, Redbud, Spider Flower & a Green Olive Tree are featured in a sunny aspect, ground planted.

Enclosing the water rill, troughs planted with Sweet flag Acorus add both safety & minimalism, while Swordleaf Rush, Pickerelweed & Water Lilies grow in the water. A bar is hidden behind a Cedar screen with doors unveiling it when required. An outdoor oven adds a bold focal point, warmth, illumination & a cooking amenity by the main lounge.
