The quantum and diversity of Indian architecture is something to which we all stand witness to. With such a rich culture and history, the country has become a birthplace for architects, designers, and artists. The design field is constantly evolving with each generation of designers contributing something valuable. The relatively newer batches of designers have been having their own share of successes. They have had history to learn from and the latest technology to execute with. These designers have been contributing to innovation in residential, commercial, landscape, sustainable, and conservational architecture.

Some of these young designers of the country doing such inspirational work are listed below:

1. Abin Design Studio, Kolkata

Abin Design Studio was started in 2005 by Abin Chaudhuri. It is involved in residential, hospitality, and educational architecture. The firm has an exceptional eye for detail when it comes to materials, light, and site context. It has been recognized among the top architects in the country because of its consistency in innovation.

2. Modo Design, Ahmedabad

The firm was founded in 2002 by architect Arpan Shah, and undertakes projects from the residential and corporate spheres. Modo Design has been recognized by several media companies for its projects. The firm believes in designing the site and user-specific projects while also focussing on the relationship between the built spaces to the open spaces. Each project is also prioritized in terms of its construction.

One of the firm’s projects, the Verandah House is shown below. It is an amalgamation of contemporary interiors and raw exteriors.

3. Made in Earth, Bengaluru

The firm was founded as a sustainable design practice in 2015 by Shruthi Ramakrishna, Agnimitra Bachi, Ajinkya Unhale, and Jeremie Gauden. Made in Earthworks, with locally sourced and natural building materials to minimize environmental impact; it also conducts several workshops on materials and construction techniques.

The project shown below is the Brick Kiln House. It was executed with earth blocks and thatch as materials.

4. Architecture BRIO, Mumbai

The firm was started in 2006 by Shefali Balwani and Robert Verrijt. Although the firm deals with projects throughout the spectrum, its main focus lies in residential designs. The firm’s ideology is to not let the built form take center stage but instead, weave it along with the site. The design formed is a deep understanding of the climate, site, topography, and user.

5. Wallmakers, Kerala

Wallmakers was founded in 2007 by architect Vinu Daniel. The firm focuses on sustainable and cost-effective designs with mud and waste as the primary construction materials.

The pictures shown below are from the Kurien Phillip residence designed by the firm. The architecture explores material and construction techniques to produce an eco-friendly but elegant but, elegant solution.

6. 1leapingfrog Studio, Bengaluru

The firm was started in 2012 by architects Bhyrav B R and Aatira L. Zacharias. The firm lays emphasis on ‘space’ and tries to weave its design around it. Urban context, climate, and sustainability are considered while designing simple and minimalistic designs.

The project shown below is the Sampada house. The images communicate the firm’s ideal to create better and liveable interiors.

7. Opolis, Mumbai

The firm was started as a multidisciplinary studio by Rahul Gore and Sonal Sancheti in 2001. It is recognized in the country amongst the top architectural firms. The firm invests itself in the individuality and quality of each project. As a result, its projects are contemporary and responsive.

Charged Voids was founded in 2007 by principal architect, Aman Aggarwal. The award-winning firm has undertaken several projects from the residential and commercial spheres. It combines Western aesthetics with Indian sensitivity to produce modern and elegant solutions.

Studio Organon is an interdisciplinary studio founded in 2006 by Saurabh Dakshini. The firm’s approach to a design solution is through an intense process of understanding the client and site. Each space is crafted with sensitivity to material, light, and user mobility.

d6thD is a young firm started by architect Himanshu Patel. The studio focuses on vernacular architecture and has been widely recognized for the same. It lays focus on traditional building techniques, natural materials, and sustainable buildings. The firm is popular for its material innovation and eye for detail.
