Today Artificial Intelligence (AI) has started to set foot in almost all the sectors pertaining to human lifestyle and Architecture is no exception. The Economist suggests that by 2037 approximately 40% of human jobs will be done by robots. But is it possible to replace creative methods such as that of architecture and other creative practices with equivalent artificial intelligence?

Well, it certainly feels like entering science fiction but experts believe sooner or later it is ought to ensue. It does look like a distant dream, however; AI has gradually begun to invade the design industry already.

Architecture in recent years has emerged with some overwhelming technologies and as AI is evolving, it can be believed that it has pros more than just cons. It can be seen as an opportunity for endless creativity since it can resort to more mundane tasks which involve close-end operations. It has also scope for more speed in the already existing process with no or less chance for human errors. While the topic is up for speculation for a long time, it can affect the industry in a lot of organised ways.

Construction

AI has already touched the construction processes in a lot of places where advanced technologies were present. In cases where instant construction was made possible only because of robots and drones led construction sites. Although, there is room for more improvement till those techniques reach the common man and revolutionise the entire industry. Not only construction processes, but it can also make the management of the project a lot easier and convenient.

AI-led Softwares

Parametric Architecture is slowly making a mark in the design circles and is becoming quite popular among architects. With the onset of AI in Parametric and unleashed creativity, it is expected to see some of the most unimagined designs coming alive. Parametric architecture still gives a lot of freedom to architects, but assessing those complex algorithms and mechanisms which remain unexplored can become a lot easier.

The geometrical programming tools, sophisticated software can become way easier to handle with AI operations. This doesn’t mean architects will merely be tool operators, but the future sees AI as a tool itself.

Building Automation

This one aspect of AI has already been termed successful in our modern lives. Building automation has a major impact when it comes to the designing of spaces. It has made our lives easier on a large scale. Also, not only individual households, it has reconImaged the entire industries around it and is successful in combat major issues such as security. Even the future has more in store for automation. Experts are continuously trying to improve and expand its functionalities.

What other impacts do you expect in the future? The most interesting one is the academic system.

3D Printing

With the advent of a lot of new ways of producing designs, architectural education is looking up to new reforms in teaching methodologies. With quick access to 3D printing and laser techniques, learning has become faster. Artificial Intelligence has broken into the world of 3d printing. With the help of robotic intelligence, 3D printing is now a much simpler process and has manufactured large-scale art and design installations everywhere.

Smart Cities

Cities are transforming every day with the advent of newer technologies at a fast pace. In the coming years, cities won’t resemble present-day cities even a bit. While this is due to holistic developments in the world of technology, a lot is attributed to Artificial Intelligence. With smart cities, plenty of urban design concepts will require rejuvenation along with fresh ideas. However, the basic idea of the city remains intact but with live technology driven by real data and communication, a lot of new challenges will be posted in front of designers.

At the same time, AI can reconImage the functioning of a city resulting in a lot of resolved issues which are also a major risk in today’s world.

While this all sounds hypothetical to a lot of you, all this is stored in the near future. Artificial Intelligence on one side poses a major threat to a lot of jobs in the world, it is also an invention to ease human life to another extent. A lot of common day technologies were also a vision some years back, likewise, Artificial Intelligence is gradually making its way to epitome. Although every technology comes with its pros and cons, looking at the pros once can remould the mindset.
