Transportation design is a crucial factor that can determine the efficiency of an urban plan, and it is indeed a key tool to understand and wander the conceived space.
Just like everything else in our era, the urban space is constantly changing and evolving. Thus, and as an evident consequence so must do our ways of transportation.
To illustrate that, here is a count of 10 transportation designs from the future:
1. The high-flying caterpillar train by Ashwani Kumar Upadhyaya | Transportation design
Caterpillar Trains rise from the idea to spread the train system even narrow to residential areas.
With its minimal design, and arches system it is meant to face the different problems our cities are facing (traffic congestion…) without disturbing or overloading the urbanscape.
2. Clip-Air’s modular transport system
By Land, Sea, or Air. Clip-Air Modular Transportation Capsules does it all. not only that it eliminates wasting time and fuel; but with it’s innovative and modular design it is meant to be accommodated by the already existing infrastructures (train stations, airports and harbours), thus it aims to smooth the transit between different transportations methods for a more optimized mobility experience.
3. Norway‘s underwater floating tunnels | Transportation design
Through time, Humans overrun it all. The ground, the sky, SPACE and now underwater too.
The concept of this design is to build a pair of concrete tubes submerged about 100 feet below the water’s surface, using floating bridge technology. This latter is thought of as a great solution to avoid traffic, disagreeable and hard weather conditions and cut out wasted time especially in Scandinavian countries.
4. Hyperloop Alpha by Elon Musk
The interesting twist In Elon Musk’s vision is to create a specific environment that allows it’s its technique to work efficiently, which can be tricky but not impossible
The parameters of this special environment (air, pressure…) have a direct influence on the tubic design of the loops, Nevertheless, this latter demonstrates clear futuristic aesthetics complementing its dynamic shape.
5. Orion’s Belt – Cal Craven | Transportation design
Why not think “sustainability” in seas as well I say? Orion’s belt gives birth to a new form of luxury, one that is more sustainable and environmentally conscious.
with its clear geometrical lines, Aluminium covered surfaces and minimalist design, Orion’s belt is not meant to just wander the sea but also to explore it and help clean plastic residuals for them to be processed and recycled. It is a win-win relationship.
6. Horizon Mass Transit System
The Horizon system is a hybrid electrical system that combines both functionalities of a plane and train. It is completely autonomous which makes it the largest drone ever conceived.
The passengers are transported within small Skylink trains, where these latter are attached and lifted carefully by the enormous space-ship like aircraft. both components of the system are movable (trains and space ship) which allow them to work independently or complete and work harmoniously together.
7. Androline by Jianyu (Andy) Zou
The Androline design does not only set the future transport standers but also comes with a distinguished service proposal making it a business model for future transportation.
These interactive smart minibuses comprise an adjustable modular-designed interior that optimises the social interaction inside of it and assures an optimized user experience. qualifying them to become more than just a mean of transportation but also a platform for commercial and social exchange.
8. Skytran : NASA | Transportation design
SkyTran is a personal rapid transit system (PRT), that consists of autonomous,zero-emission vehicles that hang above the congested streets without actually overburdening them, thanks to their thin structured hanging railways and properly-sized transportation capsules.
Using passive Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) technology, these Jet-like vehicles provides high-speed, low-cost and waste-free transportation.
9. Manned Cloud by Jean-Marie Massaud
With this design, the standers are different… almost dreamy; and the destination is only an eventual consequence of the journey.
With its organic whale-shaped design, Manned could is a flying hotel containing all its different luxurious cells (rooms, spa, a library, a gym …). by providing a cruise in the air, It dares to redefine travel in all forms.
10. Passing Cloud by Tiago Barros | Transportation design
This oeuvre poses what’s close to being an existential question “why travel at high speed?”
The Passing Cloud is a visionary and environmentally friendly design that does not require a unique infrastructure but does indeed provide a unique travelling experience freed of all modern travel restraints.
With its cloud shaped-like design consisting of several spherical balloons, it offers the passengers a full “floating sensation”, with an open schedule, where the destination is only a pretext and the goal is the journey itself.
“The reality about transportation is that it’s future-oriented. If we’re planning for what we have, we’re behind the curve,” says Anthony Foxx, when thinking transportation, it is now vital more than ever to think of what’s to be, for that our cities are more “understandable” and that their stories are properly communicated to the wanderers.
