Openbook Architecture is a Portuguese multidisciplinary architecture studio. It was founded in 2007 and consists of a team of around 40 including architects, designers and project managers. Openbook Architecture operates in different phases of the real estate; covering full-service customer support from architectural plans and engineering, corporate and interior design, project management and real estate consultancy. 

Brandchitecture is Openbook’s philosophy for the development of high-end architectural, corporate projects and projects that have sophisticated levels of customization, where the most recent aesthetic and functional trends are considered and applied.

1. Luz Saúde Vila Real Hospital | Openbook

Luz Saúde Vila Real Hospital is rehabilitation and adaptation of an existing building. The concept for this project was an architectural design that is in perfect harmony with the pre-existing and surrounding buildings.

2. Mytha Spa – Hotel Villa Magna

Year: 2018
Client: Hotel Villa Magna
Area: 380 sq. m.
Status: Completed

Mytha SPA is a space designed to help you absorb yourself in an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquillity. The Spa is located in Hotel Villa Magna in Madrid which is a contemporary luxury hotel.

Natural materials of good quality such as travertine and wood are used. The decorative patterns of the tiles for the walls at the reception area are taken from Mashrabiya or Muxarabi which is an Arabic architectural element that is associated with privacy.

3. VdA – Vieira de Almeida

Project Type: Corporate and Offices
Location: Europe, Lisbon, PT
Year: 2018
Client: VdA -Vieira de Almeida
Area: 11268 sq. m.
Status: Completed

VdA – Vieira de Almeida is an award-winning urban rehabilitation project that strengthens their commitment to the city of Lisbon.

It was possible to maintain the industrial character that marked an era by recovering the reference elements. However, the design was adapted to meet the current requirements of the users of the building. The rich palette of textures, tonalities and shapes resulted in creating a space that reflects the culture of VdA – Vieira de Almeida.

4. GL

Project Type: Corporate and Offices
Location: Lisbon, PT
Year: 2020
Client: GL S.A.
Area: 350 sq. m.
Status: Completed

GL Offices is an interior architecture and design project. The main challenge in this project was adhering to the pre-existing elements. 

By exposing these elements, the focus was brought on the architectural features which are characteristic of Lisbon‘s riverside area. Colour is used in small elements that accentuate the architectural intervention.

5. São Carlos | Openbook

Project Type: Residential
Location: EUROPE, Lisbon, PT
Year: 2017
Client: Vogue
Status: Completed

São Carlos is located in the historical ‘Largo de São Carlos’ in Chiado, next to the Opera House. The building is to be rehabilitated completely. The ground floor will be for commercial use and the upper floors will be reserved for high-end apartments.

The main goal was to respect the uniqueness of Lisbon’s “Pombalino” architectural style.

6. Deloitte Hub

Project Type: Corporate and Offices
Location: Europe, Lisbon, PT
Year: 2016
Client: Deloitte Portugal
Area: 12000 sq. m.
Status: Completed

Deloitte Hub was a project which needed a solution which would upgrade the existing work environment of the workspace. The aim was to encourage an increase in productivity and innovation through the design of the new work environment while connecting the spaces to the Deloitte brand.

The concept for this design was Synapse which is a connection (nervous) between neurons. Dynamic elements and spatial arrangements are introduced while organizing the space. Colour is used carefully to create an emphasis in the spaces.

7. Abreu Advogados

Project Type: Corporate and Offices
Location: EUROPE, Lisbon, PT
Year: 2017
Client: Abreu Advogados
Area: 7400 sq. m.
Status: Completed

Abreu Advogados was designed in a pre-existing warehouse and was converted into the headquarters of a law firm with 350 employees. The main objective was to utilise the large spaces of the old warehouses with noble materials and high-end finishes.

The challenge was to maintain the volume of the existing building while renovating it into a modern office. Local Portuguese materials and traditional references were also incorporated.

8. Telles de Abreu

Area: 1400 sq. m.
Status: Completed

Telles de Abreu’s office is a historical building which needed to be refurbished. 

The office design renovation was done in a manner to ensure the satisfaction of the users and most importantly to preserve the historical character of the building.

9. Sobralinho Church

Project Type: Public and Cultural
Location: EUROPE, Vila Franca de Xira, PT
Year: 2003
Status: Completed

Sobralinho Church is a church in Portugal. The church is a relatively modern and minimalist building for a religious institution. 

Concrete is majorly the material used for construction. The slit in the building in the form of a cross or the slits in the slab for natural light are its striking features. The exposed concrete gives a very raw finish to the building.

10. Turcifal Monastery | Openbook

Project Type: Public and Cultural
Location: EUROPE, Torres Vedras, PT
Year: 2001

Turcifal Monastery is built in concrete which is left exposed. The elements are used in its most natural form. The yellow and bright white lighting, the calm water bodies with the mellow waterfall all provide a feeling of peacefulness.

11. Alcácer do Sal House

Status: Completed

Alcácer do Sal House is a residential project. It’s a 400 sq. m. house which rests on a large property surrounded by greenery. 

Alcácer do Sal House is built with a fairly modern approach. Its sloping roof, courtyards and large openings for natural light are the most beautiful as well as unique features.

12. Infarmed Laboratories 

Project Type: Healthcare
Location: EUROPE, Lisbon, PT
Year: 2012
Status: Completed

Infarmed Laboratories are a quality control and analysis laboratory in Lisbon. The main goal is to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines and the quality, safety and performance of health products in order to avoid the risks of their use while ensuring adequate standards of public health and consumer’s protection. 

There are lots of skylights and cut-outs in the ceiling for natural light and ventilation. Exposed brick and exposed concrete are contrasting each other making the building stand out.

13. São Nicolau | Openbook

Project Type: Residential

Area: 1350 sq. m.
Status: Completed

São Nicolau is the restoration of an old building which is located in Lisbon.

The main aim of the restoration was to respect the historical identity of the façade of the building and its interiors and to complement it with a contemporary design that adds to the aesthetic as well as functionality.

14. Lapa Apartment

The Lapa Apartment is located in the historical centre of Lisbon. 

The proposed solutions enhance the historical heritage while harmoniously introducing contemporary features that celebrate the traditional craftsmanship as well as Lisbon’s unique natural light and views out to the river.

15. Cascais Market | Openbook

Project Type: Public and Cultural
Location: EUROPE, Cascais, PT
Year: 2004
Status: Completed

Cascais Market is an open market in Portugal designed by Openbook. 

It’s a place where people gather to buy fresh produce from the locals. It is a compounded area which is opened up to the public. There is adequate open space. The landscaping done to beautify the area.
