The campus of the National Center for Physics and Mathematics includes a scientific and educational complex, based on a branch of Moscow State University, a hotel, a cultural center, housing for students, residents, lecturers and service personnel, as well as service buildings and a park. The campus is for education, fundamental science and research, it is for life, work and leisure.

The heart of the campus is a preserved picturesque forest for walking and leisure. The existing square forest area in the developed territory is located right in the middle of the campus and is surrounded on different sides by the research and education center, residential and public buildings. This location emphasizes the main campus advantage: balance between a city’s civilization and nature.

The core of the campus is the University Arch with a silhouette symbolizing the tectonic composition of the main building of Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory. It is something like a three-dimensional portal the arch opens to the sky as a symbol of the Future, to the library as a symbol of Knowledge, to the forest as a symbol of Nature. There is a double-sided amphitheater under the arch, which is the main common area of the campus, a place for communication, meetings and events. The focus of the Portal is an engineering optical object d’art forming a dynamic cloud of mirrors directing sunlight into the amphitheater.

The main central block is formed around the campus core. The quarter is formed by the University building and the IT center, which are united by a common lobby on the ground floor, and a library “bridge” upstairs, as well as the buildings of the hotel and the cultural center with the museum. There are residential buildings and houses to the right of the block and the buildings of the startup and the sports complex integrated into the existing Technopark structure — to the left.

The residential quarter is located in proximity to the university and is represented by three blocks of low-rise buildings: a hostel for students, a residential building with apartments for lecturers and residents, town houses for professors and lecturers. The accommodation is designed considering interests and privacy of each target group. A public roof terrace and a cozy student courtyard were hence arranged in the hostel for students. Townhouses inspired by the architecture of the wooden engineering and technical staff cottages of Sarov, are intended for the professors.

Ecosystem. Not only the buildings, but by the common areas quality and variety shape the environment that the project develops. In addition to the Forest and the Amphitheater, as key spaces, it is worth noting other equally important ones that create a unique comfortable environment for campus life.

The cultural center, the museum and the hotel with their cafes and restaurants face the boulevard, which is the main urban space. The central alley covered with wild grasses marks the border between the university and the hotel. Mega-pergola is a linear space separating the campus from the Technopark complex, where various activities, such as table tennis, exhibition spaces, and workouts are integrated, all with a forest view.

The architectural concept for NCPM came as a result of the competition operated by Citymakers. The goal of the competition was to select an innovative sustainable architectural solution  for future residents of  NCPM that would combine possibilities for efficient scientific activities and comfortable life.  The Citymakers team   created the functional concept and technical brief. To organize the competition, the Citymakers experts analyzed  the modern educational clusters, studied the design environment and territory, determined and described the values and needs of future users. The competition participants were to elaborate the territory design concepts, public spaces layout and an architectural image of the future NCPM.
