History of IIA

The Indian Institute of Architects was founded in 1917 as the Architectural Student’s Association by a group of architecture graduates from the Sir J.J. School of Art. Their inaugural meeting occurred on May 12th at Mr. Foster King’s bungalow in Mumbai’s School of Art compound. It was at this gathering that the association was formed, with Mr. George Wittet, the Consulting Architect to the Government of Bombay, becoming its first president. Initially serving as a student platform, the association soon attracted practicing architects, prompting the need for a more inclusive name. In 1922, under the leadership of Mr. Batley, the organization was renamed the Bombay Architectural Association. During this time, the idea of allying with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) emerged, culminating in a formal partnership in 1925. This partnership allowed the association to host RIBA’s final exams in India and elevated its professional status. Furthermore, a five-year diploma course introduced in 1923 was recognized for exemption from RIBA’s intermediate exams, marking a significant leap forward for architectural education in India.

In 1929, after aligning with RIBA, the association officially restructured into the Indian Institute of Architects. This transition marked a shift from a local group to a national institution with a mission to promote architectural education, enhance professional standards, and support architects across India. The Institute’s first permanent headquarters was established at the Sohrab F. Bharoocha Architectural Library in Mumbai, providing a central hub for its activities. Over time, the Institute’s membership grew from 158 in 1929 to more than 29,000 today, underscoring its pivotal role in shaping the architectural profession in India.

Why Join IIA?

The Indian Institute of Architects runs outreach programs annually to strengthen the architectural community across India. These initiatives promote the profession both within the community and to the public. Delivered through the Institute’s Chapters and Centres, these programs utilize regional languages and various media channels, including newspapers, television, and digital platforms, to engage a broad audience. Public lectures, especially on significant days like World Environment Day and World Habitat Day, raise awareness of key architectural issues.

Networking provides architecture students with a unique opportunity to connect with professionals who can offer valuable guidance, internship placements, and even mentorship for their thesis projects. By attending industry events, workshops, and conferences, students gain a deeper understanding of how theoretical knowledge applies in real-world scenarios. These interactions expose students to a diverse range of professionals, from senior architects in large firms to founders of small design studios. These connections also provide early exposure to innovative materials, technologies, and design philosophies, greatly influencing their architectural journey.

Senior architects play a crucial role in offering mentorship and recognition to the young lot, especially through awards and accolades that increase visibility and confidence. As they gain experience, many young architects start their firms, with the architectural community offering essential support during the early stages of their careers.

Networking helps these senior architects build meaningful relationships with peers, expand their influence, and advocate for important causes, such as sustainability, affordable housing, and urban development policies. It also allows them to share their work and ideas, building a solid reputation and gaining recognition for their contributions to the field. Moreover, networking keeps senior architects informed about industry trends, ensuring they stay at the forefront of the profession.
