For most of the last century, a sofa was a fixed object. It arrived in one piece, it went where it fit, and it stayed there until it was replaced. That assumption is quietly being dismantled — not by a change in aesthetics, but by a change in hardware.

Modular seating is no longer a novelty specified for showrooms and co-working lounges. It has become a default consideration in residential interiors, driven by smaller floor plates, more frequent moves, and clients who expect furniture to adapt to a room rather than dictate it. The interesting part, for anyone specifying furniture, is what makes that adaptability actually work: the connection system.

Why the joint became the design problem

A modular sofa is only as good as the thing holding it together. Early modular systems relied on loose alignment — pieces that simply sat next to one another and drifted apart under use. Anyone who has specified those knows the failure mode: within months, the client has a row of separate chairs pretending to be a sectional.

The current generation solves this at the joint, and there are broadly four approaches in circulation.

Bracket-and-plate systems use a metal plate fixed to each module’s base, joined by a bracket that slides or bolts across the gap. Strong and rigid, but they generally require tools, and reconfiguring means getting on the floor with an Allen key.

Interlocking clips mould a male and female profile into the frame or base rail. Pieces push together and lock. No tools, fast to reconfigure, but tolerances matter enormously — a few millimetres of manufacturing drift and the clips either won’t seat or won’t hold.

Gravity and hook joints rely on the weight of the module plus a hooked lip that engages when the piece is set down. Elegant, tool-free, and self-tightening under load, though they perform poorly on uneven floors.

Magnetic and latch hybrids are the newest category, combining a magnet for alignment with a mechanical latch for retention. They solve the alignment problem that plagues clip systems, at some cost.

What to specify, and what to ask

Three questions separate a modular system that will still be reconfigurable in five years from one that will not.

Is the connection concealed? Visible brackets read as institutional furniture. Concealed joints preserve the line of the piece, which matters more in residential work than in contract.

Can one person reconfigure it? This is the practical test of “modular.” If moving a chaise from one end to the other requires two people and a tool, clients will not do it, and the modularity is theoretical.

Can modules be bought individually later? A modular system that is only sold as a complete set is a sectional with extra steps. The value proposition depends on the client being able to add a seat, a corner, or an ottoman in year three.

To that list, add one more that is easy to overlook at specification stage: how the piece arrives. Modules that ship in individual cartons one person can carry can be moved up a stair, through a narrow corridor, or into a lift that would defeat a conventional sofa. On upper-floor and heritage projects, this is frequently the difference between a piece that can be installed and one that cannot.

Systems worth looking at

A short list of manufacturers approaching the problem differently.

The wider point

Modularity has been sold for two decades on flexibility, and for most of that time the flexibility was more marketing than mechanism. What has changed is that the hardware finally supports the claim. A joint that a single person can make and unmake, repeatedly, without tools, is what turns a set of upholstered boxes into a system.

For designers, this shifts the specification question. It is no longer only about form, fabric and dimension. It is about whether the piece can still be reconfigured after the client has lived in the space for three years — and that answer is determined almost entirely by a detail nobody sees.
