The crypto market has expanded tremendously over the years, currently comprising thousands of digital currencies across different categories such as stablecoins, meme coins, utility coins, central bank digital currencies (CBDC), and so on. However, what sets these assets apart from one another is not the classes they pertain to, but the unique characteristics and the deriving benefits that each project can provide to users – in short, their specific value propositions.

It stands to reason that cryptocurrencies with actual utility are more likely to gain adoption — and, in turn, increase in value — because they solve tangible problems and serve clear purposes. Bitcoin is popular not only for being the first crypto, but also because it can be used as a medium of exchange, instead of fiat currency, and is often referred to as digital gold, due to its limited supply and use as a hedge against inflation. Ethereum operates as a programmable blockchain with smart contract functionality. The platform enables the creation of decentralized applications (dApps), using its native crypto Ether to facilitate these services.

So, what is XRP’s value proposition? The XRP to USD price has risen considerably this past year, cementing the asset’s standing as a noteworthy contender in the crypto space. But price appreciation alone is not enough to determine a crypto’s long-term potential and viability as an investment venue. Before you decide if XRP would make a good addition to your portfolio or not, you should look beyond price performance and familiarize yourself with its value proposition, learning about the utility, technology, and ecosystem that underpin it.

Powering an efficient cross-border payments system

Ripple, the parent company of XRP, has developed a suite of blockchain-based products focused on improving global payments, and XRP plays a key role in this ecosystem. The solutions put forward by Ripple include the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and RippleNet.

Launched in 2012, XRPL is an open-source decentralized blockchain platform designed specifically for secure, fast, and low-cost transactions. Bitcoin served as the inspiration for XRPL, but its creators wanted to take things one step forward and improve upon the main crypto’s technology, so they developed a highly-performant network that settles transactions in as little as 3 to 5 seconds, which is considerably faster than the processing speeds of Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Costs are another major improvement as the platform incurs minimal fees, usually around $0.0002 per transaction, which makes it particularly appealing for those conducting high-volume or frequent payments across borders. Furthermore, the network can handle up to 1,500 transactions per second thanks to its unique consensus mechanism, surpassing many of its competitors in terms of scalability. As XRPL’s native token, XRP is instrumental to its operations.

In 2019, Ripple Labs unified several of its products, including xCurrent, xRapid, and xVia, under the RippleNet brand, its flagship service, which also leverages XRPL’s capabilities to deliver cross-border payments services to institutional users, such as banks, fintech companies, and money service providers. This launch also expanded XRP’s utility as both a settlement layer and bridge currency.

RippleNet offers an on-demand liquidity (ODL) solution where XRP serves as a settlement layer. While traditional cross-border payments are usually slow and often take several days to settle due to complicated procedures and multiple intermediaries, XRP can speed up the process considerably, ensuring near-instant settlement. In situations where one needs to trade currencies that have no direct exchange rate, XRP can function as a neutral, bridge currency by providing real-time liquidity and eliminating the need to pre-fund nostro/vostro accounts in destination currencies.

Institutions can take advantage of RippleNet’s services without engaging with XRP, as some of its functions, such as xCurrent and xVia, don’t require the asset. However, for those requiring access to on-demand liquidity when moving money across borders, using XRP as a bridge currency offers a simple and effective solution. According to official Ripple data, the demand for ODL services is rising in regions like Asia-Pacific and Latin America.

With Ripple’s service suite, companies can tap into XRPL for swift and secure international transactions without relying on traditional banking networks, and XRP serves as the gateway to all these perks. Data for 2024 reveals that over 300 financial institutions worldwide, including Santander, SBI Holdings, and American Express, employed Ripple’s services, and many of them used XRP to make the process smoother.

DeFi and tokenization

For Ripple, innovation is a constant – a commitment reflected in the ongoing development of the XRP Ledger, which is currently expanding its capabilities by stepping into the decentralized finance (DeFi) and tokenization space. This means that developers can now use the ledger for creating decentralized exchanges, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and deploying smart contracts.

With the introduction of these new use cases, XRP’s utility is also evolving beyond a cross-border payment tool. These advancements are bound to make Ripple more attractive to institutional players and, at the same time, strengthen XRP’s standing in the cryptocurrency market.

Legal clarity and growing institutional adoption

XRP can also be considered a trailblazer for regulatory clarity in the crypto industry because of the SEC v. Ripple case. The legal battle was initiated by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission when it filed a lawsuit against Ripple for allegedly conducting an unregistered securities offering by selling XRP.

While the case affected Ripple’s reputation and XRP’s price performance, it also brought unexpected benefits by clarifying that programmatic sales of XRP are not securities in the United States. This resolution, following the July 2023 Judge Analisa Torres ruling, has reduced regulatory uncertainty for XRP and Ripple, potentially setting a precedent for other cryptocurrencies and increasing institutional confidence and adoption.

XRP’s value stems from it being an innovative asset with applicability across various areas such as cross-border payments, liquidity provision, tokenization, and decentralized finance. The fact that XRP has also been at the center of one of the most high-profile legal clashes in crypto history, merging with a partial victory against the SEC, also underscores its value and unique position in the crypto realm.
