Abhimanyu Dalal Architects, ADA, was established by Architect Abhimanyu Dalal in the year 1987. The practice is based in Delhi and is also very well known for its unique way of blending modern techniques and traditional architecture. Throughout the years, the firm has combined industry trends with strong fundamentals of design which has given the firm its unique identity. This article explores more into the works of ADA, by studying its projects and strategies used by the firm to stay relevant in the competitive field.

Founding and Philosophy

Abhimanyu Dalal founded ADA three decades ago, He has an experience of over 35 years in the field of architecture and urban design. He is an alumnus of CEPT University and Harvard GSD and has balanced teaching, research and practice throughout his career. ADA, just like Dalal, believes in creating spaces that are contextual in nature, design that enhances the current landscapes while also keeping in mind the modern needs of today.

The firm’s efforts were featured in Architectural Digest India’s AD50 2017 Luminaries, noting its contribution to the architectural landscape.

Notable Projects

Abhimanyu Dalal Architect’s portfolio of significant projects is one of the most distinctive features of its mark. The following are a few significant projects that have influenced the firm’s identity:

Mayo College Campus, Ajmer:

Mayo College campus in Ajmer was restored by the Abhimanyu Dalal architects. This is a very prominent example that shows how the firm is skilled enough to combine the architectural heritage of a place with modern design techniques. The firm has revived old architectural construction techniques by using local materials and hence, has provided solutions that are very site-specific. They have drawn inspiration from the Indo-Saracenic Architectural Style and have combined it with the indigenous methods of design. This ensured that the history of Mayo College was preserved and also ensured the adaptation to modern needs.

Abhimanyu Dalal, is actually best known for his contemporary designs. But in the case of Mayo College, he identified the school’s architectural history and the school’s strong attachment to it. This encouraged him to develop the new structure that will continue the institution’s strong legacy. According to Dalal, “Sustainability is not just zero carbon; it is also about livelihoods.”

Chandni Chowk Redevelopment Plan:

Chandni Chowk is a very busy, vibrant marketplace in Delhi. In 2006, a decision was made to redevelop the market. Initially, it had enthusiasm and planned to reduce the congestion by pedestrianizing it. Dalal was initially in charge of this project and was involved in the conceptualization of this project. He aimed at wider walkways, pedestrianization of the paths, heritage tram proposals, and relocating the services part under the ground for prevention of theft and easy maintenance. However, the project lacked momentum, Dalal stated that what started as a redevelopment project has become a street improvement.

Collaborative Efforts

Abhimanyu Dalal Architects and Untitled Design have collaborated on three projects. Their projects are an example of how collaboration can not only produce impressive projects but also it can reshape people’s understanding of creativity and broaden their design.

He emphasizes the value of collaboration and says it’s not about competition but rather learning from each other. He says that this partnership has brought a very unique perspective that architects may overlook and has in turn enhanced their design more by thoughtful interior designing.

Collaborations often bring in new ideas. Here both the parties have learned from each other, Where Untitled Design has adopted Dalal’s attention to detail, Dalal has admired Untitled Design’s approach to blend traditional and modern materials.

Both their experience here highlights how mutual respect and willingness to learn can bring positive results and innovative ideas to the table.

Adaptation to Industry Trends

Abhimanyu Dalal Architect’s capacity to adapt to industry shifts has contributed to its long-term success. Some of the important strategies are:

  • Collaboration: The firm believes in working with interior designs and see them as collaborators rather than competitors. The collaboration with Untitled Design has led to a more user-centric, cohesive design that balances the architecture and as well as interior
  • Traditional and Modern Practices: The firm attempts to preserve the history and heritage of a place but also addresses the current modern needs of the place. It blends traditional methods with modern methods to bring in more suitable and innovative solutions
  • Sustainability: As mentioned by Dalal, sustainability is not just about materials but also about livelihoods, he focuses more on contextual and user-centric designs while encouraging local construction practices and materials.

Overall, Abhimanyu Dalal Architect’s work combines artistic visions and practical considerations that make the spaces more beautiful and functional. He demonstrates how a firm can be established on strong design principles like using local materials, respecting the past while bringing solutions for the future, and through smart collaborations.
