Meta Description: Find the best ways to make your business transport and vehicles more
eco-friendly.

Becoming more eco-friendly as a company can take a lot of time and effort, with many
focussing on their transport operations as a point that can be most improved. Here are a few tips to help you make your logistics and transport department far more sustainable.

Improved Routes

Whether you transport cardboard slip sheets or new furniture, the first thing you should do is optimize your transport routes. This means ensuring your delivery vehicles take the fastest and most fuel-efficient delivery route every single time they are on the road.

Use vehicle trackers to follow your trucks and analyze where you can make improvements
that will ensure your vehicles stay on the roads for as little time as possible.

Traffic

Part of route optimization involved analyzing and avoiding traffic hotspots. Trucks sitting in traffic emit far more chemicals into the air compared to a truck that takes a slightly longer route, but doesn’t spend any time in traffic. This step does require a lot of research and will take time, but it is it well-worth the effort in the end.

Fuel Efficiency

Be sure to always use routes that are fuel-efficient. This could mean using a route that has
minimal traffic and stops, or even one that has more downhills, as going downhill is more
fuel-efficient than going uphill.

Transition to Electric Vehicles

If you have the funds available, the best step you can take is to invest in electric vehicles.
They are better for the environment, don’t emit the same fuels into the air, and will lessen
your environmental impact from the start.

Even take a much smaller step and investing in electric bicycles can make a massive
difference in the long run, and is much more affordable even for relatively small businesses.

Short-Distance Alternatives

Speaking of electric bicycles, changing the vehicles and transportation you use for short and medium-distance deliveries is another step you should take. For instance, a delivery that is one or two miles down the road can easily be done by someone on a bicycle as opposed to someone using a car or truck.

While this would incur a high initial cost, it will pay off in the months to come as the amount you will save on fuel, road tax, etc will be large.

Fleet Maintenance

Much like any piece of technology or equipment, a truck or car’s performance is related to its maintenance. To get your vehicles performing at their best, you need to ensure they are
correctly and regularly maintained.

Tires, for instance, can affect fuel efficiency as ones with lower treads have a higher rolling
resistance, which uses more fuel.

Shipment Consolidation

Another crucial step in becoming more eco-frienly is to consolidate your shipments. In simple terms, this means having all your shipments in one place, and therefore, you won’t need your vehicles to make several stops before heading out for deliveries.

Another step is to use the Amazon method, which entails sending out one vehicle to one
area a day, and have that one vehicle do all the deliveries for that postcode.

Local Delivery Hubs

While not possible to do across the entire you are in, you can invest in delivery hubs. This
can be a warehouse or something similar where a handful of larger trucks drop off deliveries for a specific area, and then your fleet of electric trucks or bicycles stop at the hub to pick up the goods they are delivering.

This means your larger, more fuel-heavy vehicles spend less time on the road, but you aren’t sacrificing delivery speed or efficiency.

Employee Education

It is also important to educate your drivers on how to become more eco-friendly with their
driving. For instance, constant accelerations use more fuel compared to driving at a steady
speed for a longer period of time.

Another small step is to encourage your drivers to park and turn off their vehicles when
delivering goods, and to deliver by foot if possible to multiple locations in the same area. It is also important to incentivize your drivers for being more eco-friendly, instead of being fast.

Speeding, idling instead of switching off, etc, increase when a driver feels the need to be
fast. Limiting, or completely eliminating this need will benefit your eco-friendly cause.

Offset Transport Emissions

If you have optimized your routes and fleet as much as you can but you still feel the need to
do more, you can offset your emissions further by taking extra steps, such as installing
electric charging stations on-site or using solar energy to power warehouses, delivery
depots, and offices.

This is also a great way to receive tax cuts and benefits, as many governments around the
world are rewarding companies for becoming more eco-friendly on a large scale.

Green Transport Partners

Finally, if you are unable to invest in eco-friendly vehicles and transport solutions, you can
take the steps to partner with gree transport companies. In simple terms, instead of doing
many of your deliveries yourself, a company with electric vehicles does it for you. While this will require money, it is the best alternative to invest in if you aren’t able to invest in the eco-friendly vehicles yourself.
