Love keeps the earth spinning on its axis. While most might attribute this to gravitational forces, this notion is thrillingly challenged at The Nest. Designed for the Patels, a closely knit family of four, this abode exudes contagious affection the inhabitants harbour for each other and life as a zesty whole!

The structure is a testament to the genius of Hiren Patel Architects, who presented us with a sculptural shell that brimmed with light, wholesome moments of pause and a breezy yet intimate canvas. It quite describes a snug and blissful nest, doesn’t it?

Located in an upscale, gated community of Thaltej in suburban Ahmedabad, this three-storeyed residence prides itself on being unrestrained by a singular, definitive style. The jubilant spaces are sincere extensions of the family, dotted by art, objects of interest, and sentiment-driven design that incites a feeling of warmth.

Personalised art, eclectic lighting, and a pattern-play welcome one into the home’s foyer, setting the playful tone across the residence. The bespoke staircase is a medley of sooty stone, fabricated balustrades, and a wood handrail.

Forming the charged and melded heart of The Nest, the living, dining, and dry kitchen hold space for raucous cooking sessions and intimate meals alike. The space’s shell is a composite of concrete-washed ceilings, polished Kota floors, and furniture in olive, blush, greys, and wood tones.

Their daughter’s artistic prowess is celebrated in the larger-than-life interpretation of her Koi illustrations from many moons ago. The image was enlarged as a pixelated mosaic canvas forming the pool’s floor, introducing a plentiful dose of colour into the premises, visible from multiple vantages.

Held precariously between the poolside and the raised garden, the day room is a warm cocoon of light and earthy finishes. It doubles as a workspace, a study, and a resting place strategically located to leverage the contrasting milieus abutting the room.

On the first level, the daughters’ bedroom portrays the evolution of the young ladies’ personalities. The powder-blue-hued bed rests against a vast watercolour painting-esque wallpaper, reflecting a whimsical landscape bathed in pastels. A birchwood universe claims the other end of the room, anchoring a twin desk, a mezzanine art loft, and a reading nook framed by a sweeping voussoir.

Many explorations on the drawing board manifested the lounge. Leather-finish Kadapa stone swathes the blueprint, allowing the minty, reverse-scalloped shutters of the cabinetry to shine! The wood panelling, furniture, lighting, and art were layered intuitively, keeping the bar unit as the unchanging inspiration.

Faceted and clad in grain-streaked pine, the master suite rests drenched in shifting glints of daylight ushered in through skylights and clerestory windows. The Kota floors meet the white-washed walls, forming the ideal mise en scène for the minimalist furniture. The bedroom extends into a sunroom, siloed from the resting space by a sliding door infilled by bespoke fabric art, clasping into the desk like two jigsaw pieces.
