Art the Language of Heart

Art is a universal language that transcends boundaries, offering a window into the human experience, an expression of one’s inner self. It is a reflection of our emotions, cultures, and histories, allowing us to connect with others across time and space. Art enriches our lives by encouraging reflection and dialogue, reminding us of the beauty and complexity of the world around us. Art is both a mirror and a catalyst of growth.

“Polka Dots can’t stay alone” – Yayoi Kusama

Everyone in the world is a dot connected to other dots. Our earth is like a polka dot, among millions of other celestial bodies, so let us forget ourselves and become one with the universe. Polka dots are her signature motifs and she breaks down every object in the form of dots, as she feels obliterated by these dots coming to life. These fields of dots help Kusama relieve her hallucinations, depression, and anxiety; developed into a visual device.

A (dynamic) OASIS:

In the heart of London, where there is a rush of commuters and a bustling city centre, Liverpool station, a new art installation has captivated people. This immersive exhibit invites viewers to pause, reflect (literally and metaphorically), and engage with the urban environment. The mirrored orbs reflect the surrounding architecture, ground, sky, and people, transforming the busy station plaza into a space of contemplation, altering the perception of everyday life, and blurring the boundaries between art and daily life more mindfully. The orbs change with the environment and people interacting with them. As people walk by, their reflections warp and shift, creating a fluid, and ever-changing artwork.

Interactive and participatory aspects are central to Kusama’s artistic philosophy. By involving the viewer in the artwork, she diminishes the traditional barriers between the art, the artist, and the audience, making art a communal experience, as it fosters a sense of community, bringing people together to experience and discuss the artwork. The orbs serve as a bridge between the artist’s inner world and the public space, inviting everyone to become a part of the art. This intervention in the middle of the city provides a visual interest, breaking the monotony of the concrete jungle.

A Reflection of the Past and Present:

Located at the Liverpool Street Station, the installation intersects the art with its cultural and historical significance. This station is one of the oldest and busiest railway stations, a symbol of the city’s rich history and its role as a hub for transportation and commerce, even during both the world wars. The station’s architecture is a prime example of Victorian engineering and design, with grand arches, intricate ironwork, and brickwork, symbolising the industrial strength of that age.

Kusama’s mirrored orbs in this historic location create a dialogue between the past and the present. Continuity and change within the urban landscape are the two important factors that are highlighted as a result of the reflecting orbs. Incorporation of the different layers of history, reminding passersby of the events and people who have passed through this space. This interplay between modern art and historical architecture adds depth to the installation, making a statement on the station’s enduring legacy.

A Cultural Catalyst:

Public art installations play a crucial role in enriching the cultural life of a city. The installation contributes to the ongoing narrative of the Liverpool Street Station as a space where history, culture, and modernity intersect. Kusama through the installation invites the public to consider how these facets converge in the urban fabric, transforming a routine transit space into a site of connection and reflection.

Yayoi Kusama’s mirrored orbs outside the Liverpool Street Station are more than just an art installation, they are a reflection – literally and figuratively – of the city itself. The use of spheres and mirrors, allows the audience to see the world through her eyes, challenging their perceptions and encouraging a deeper engagement with the surroundings.
