To prepare children for the problems of the future, a modern school is imagined to embrace digital technologies and promote holistic development. In this article, Ar. Nikita Bajaj Pathak, Founder and Principal Architect of Design21, discusses her thoughts on designing schools holistically that surpass traditional school spaces.

Holistic Approach to Learning Environments

The holistic approach in school design rises above confined classrooms and textbooks. Contemporary schools now prioritise the physical well-being and mental health of the students. The design of these schools includes biophilic principles like green walls and natural light to create spaces that complement a conducive learning environment. Further, teachers are empowered to design dynamic, student-centred learning experiences, where they have flexible facilities that can accommodate different teaching modalities and group sizes. To support each person’s holistic development, our project, Shiv Nadar School in Chennai, has spaces for yoga and other activities that assist self-awareness and reduce stress to support each person’s holistic development.

Inclusion of Collaborative Zones for Creativity

The modern school requires collaborative spaces for students to communicate, exchange ideas, and learn new activities. These collaborative zones may include tools and resources that allow students to ideate, design and create. These spaces foster an environment of experiential learning that encourages creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. Schools are becoming more open to designing exterior collaborative areas in addition to interior spaces. By utilising the advantages of nature, these areas give students access to open, revitalising settings that are ideal for group projects, conversations, and teamwork.

Digital Integration for a Digital Future

As we stand at the forefront of the digital age, contemporary schools are leveraging digital tools for interactive and immersive sessions. To enhance student learning, interactive whiteboards, multimedia tools, and collaborative technology are now being used in classrooms. Considering this, our project Shiv Nadar School in Chennai includes technologically enhanced classrooms that encourage student participation, critical thinking, and teamwork. The use of virtual learning environments expands the scope of education outside of classroom settings. Remote learning is made possible by online platforms, video conferencing, and virtual reality capabilities, which give students access to instructional materials at any time and from any location.

In conclusion, the modern school is imagined as an environment that extends beyond customary boundaries, promoting holistic growth, adopting digital technology, and cultivating an innovative and sustainable culture. For the young minds of the future, this method becomes a beacon of hope for an adaptive and incredibly stimulating educational period!
