MASSLAB’s winning proposal for a new housing development in Lisbon addresses the pressing need for affordable housing and public spaces in the city, combining housing with public spaces.
The proposal, which was selected from a competitive pool of entries, includes three new housing blocks that will provide 100 new dwellings. The buildings are located in a premium area of Lisbon, near the historic Basilica da Estrela and along Infante Santo Avenue. Housing, commercial areas, and two generous public spaces open to the city are designed for a total of 20.000 m2.

The proposal’s design integrates the new buildings with the city’s heritage and urban fabric while providing much-needed public spaces. The two public spaces, a lush green garden, and a stable paved square, are designed to be inviting and to enhance the urban experience.
The interior layout of the housing blocks is based on a modular structure, providing a range of housing options from one to four-bedroom units. The flexible units can accommodate changing family dynamics and foster a sense of community. The 100 residential units are divided into innovative typologies developed around a repeating base module. The intentional design flexibility of open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas enhances social interaction, while also allowing easy separation for privacy.
