Having completed architecture and fresh into the real world or maybe having worked in this field for a bit, one might be feeling lost or probably even overwhelmed and sometimes even underwhelmed by this very field of architecture. ‘What next’ is the question that might pop up every now and then, and luckily architecture is one such field which opens multiple doors because the multitude of skills one learns in school or on the go is pretty useful in other related fields too! So here are a few career paths that one can choose from:
Urban Planner / Town Planner
If problem-solving and adaptability are one’s strong suits, one might consider working with public officials and various stakeholders as an urban planner in order to develop plans for public land use in cities. A two-year professional Master’s in Planning in Urban Planning or Urban and Regional Planning can aid one in delving into the field of town planning as well. These professionals deal with the planning of small towns as compared to Urban planners who deal with large urban areas.

Landscape Architect
If designing exterior spaces such as parks, gardens, and land spaces in and around residences, institutional campuses, hotels, and resorts, among others, excites one, then one might consider pursuing a Master’s in Landscape Architecture. Extensive knowledge of flora, fauna, habitats, and geography is a requirement for this field.

Conservation Architect
Conservation or restoration architects specialize in the preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse of historic buildings and/or structures. One might consider pursuing a Master’s in Architecture Conservation if architectural history, materials, and construction techniques excite one. Attention to detail, patience, problem-solving abilities, and a passion for cultural heritage are also essential.
Research Architect
If investigating and exploring new concepts, materials, technologies, and design methodologies excites one, then becoming a research architect is probably a fair option. They conduct studies, experiments, and analyses to generate insights, knowledge, and innovations that can be applied to architectural practice. Master’s in architectural theory and criticism, research fellowships, or even a Ph.D. can be pursued in order to delve into this field.
Naval Architect
If the design, construction, and maintenance of ships, boats, and other maritime structures excite one, then naval architecture is the way to go. Qualifications include a Master’s degree in naval architecture or a related discipline, and the skills required comprise knowledge of marine engineering, ship design software, technical drawing, project management, and other soft skills of collaboration and communication.
Lighting Architect
A lighting architect, alternatively referred to as a lighting designer, possesses expertise in crafting lighting arrangements tailored to architectural environments. Interior Designer
If curating indoor spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, functional, and well-organized is something one enjoys, then interior designing is the way to go. They have the expertise to create harmonious spatial compositions, select decorative elements, manage colour palettes and lighting choices, and choose appropriate materials for construction.

Furniture Designer
Often considered architecture’s counterpart, furniture design shares a close relationship with the field. Renowned architects like Charles and Ray Eames, Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen have left a remarkable impact on furniture design. In the present day, architects like those at Zaha Hadid Architects continue to explore both disciplines, showcasing that the creation of furniture and architecture can go hand in hand. A master’s in furniture design is something that one might consider pursuing.
BIM Manager
Professionals who act as a link between clients, design teams, contractors, and supply chain managers are BIM managers. This role involves overseeing the creation of project information models, utilising 3D visualisations that integrate data, drafts, schedules, and processes throughout the project at various stages. One can pursue a master’s in BIM or probably do short courses and internships to gain experience in this field.
CAD technician
A CAD technician is crucial in various industries like architecture, engineering, and manufacturing. They use CAD software to create detailed technical drawings based on architects’ or engineers’ specifications. Qualifications include a diploma or degree in CAD drafting and work experience.
Product Designer
Product designers are accountable for creating plans and specifications for consumer products. They improve existing products by evaluating functionality, researching competitors, and translating design requirements into practical features. With their expertise in the commercial market and technical know-how, they are instrumental in enhancing and innovating products.

Graphic Designer
Graphic designing offers the ideal path for those seeking to combine artistic skills with digital tools to create visually captivating graphics encompassing illustrations, logos, layouts, and images. Working closely with clients, they meet the visual needs of various mediums, including books, magazines, products, websites, and promotional materials. Structural Engineer

Mater’s in textile design can aid one if one wishes to dive into the textile designing field filled with colour, texture, composition, patterns, and forms, some of the skills architects already possess.
