Mesa’s history can be traced back to the arrival of the Hohokam people around 2,000 years ago. The ancient canal system was established by the Hohokam, whose name means “All Used Up” or “The Departed Ones.” The canals were the largest and most sophisticated in the prehistoric New World. At their head gates, some were up to 90 feet (27 meters) broad and 10 feet (3.0 meters) deep, spanning up to 16 miles (26 kilometres) over the desert. Water could be transported to 110,000 acres (450 km2) by A.D. 1100, transforming the Sonoran Desert into an agricultural oasis. The Hohokam had built hundreds of miles of canals by 1450, many of which are still in use today. Because explorers did not travel into this area after the Hohokam vanished and before the advent of the early settlers, nothing is known about the period between the disappearance of the Hohokam and the arrival of the early settlers. U.S. Army troops relocated the Apache in the late 1800s near present-day Mesa, allowing for settlement.
