Brescia was founded according to various myths: one attributes it to Hercules, while another attributes it to Altilia, which was founded by a fugitive from the siege of Troy. Another legend claims that the founder was Cidnus, the Ligurian king who invaded the Padan Plain in the late Bronze Age. The medieval castle is located on Colle Cidneo (Cidnus’ Hill), which was named after that version. Recent archaeological excavations have unearthed the remains of a settlement dating back to 1,200 BC that scholars believe was built and inhabited by Ligures peoples.
