The San Dieguito Complex, located in the El Pinacate Zone, contains evidence that the area has been occupied for roughly 3,000 years. Agriculture has been documented for over 2,500 years. The Seri, Tepoca, and Pima people lived in this area before the arrival of the Spanish. When European explorers were dispatched in pursuit of gold, the first interaction between the Spanish and the indigenous peoples of the area happened in the middle of the 16th century. Around 1614, the first missionaries came to Sonora, and in 1687, Eusebio Francisco Kino arrived, founding a mission at adjacent Cucurpe. The provinces of Sonora, Ostimura, and Sinaloa were loosely organized in the present-day states of Sonora and Sinaloa.
