Portuguese immigrants in the mid-eighteenth century first settled the city’s region, but it wouldn’t become a hamlet until 1824 when the first German immigrants arrived. Novo Hamburgo was part of So Leopoldo at the time, which was the cradle of German immigration in Brazil. The Germans built a thriving agricultural colony and soon began supplying food to the state’s major cities at the time.
Some of the immigrants also brought artisan skills, which were valuable in a self-sufficient, isolated economy like the one in the valley and state at the time. The first urban agglomeration in Novo Hamburgo emerged around the Hamburger Berg, where there was little business, in approximately 1870. On 5 April 1927, the city was freed from So Leopoldo and joined the rest of Brazil on the road to industrialization. In 1980, the city was designated as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Novo Hamburgo.
