Rodrigo César de Menezes, the “captain” of the captaincy of Sao Paulo at the time, built Cuiabá on January 1, 1727, after discovering gold mines. The position of a rich vein of gold was identified by the Rosário Church, which was built in the heart of the little town. An earthquake, however, destroyed much of the town in 1746. In 1835, it became the state capital. The town remained small and declined from the late eighteenth century until the Paraguayan War (1864-1870). Cuiabá supplied sugar, cereals, and timber to the Brazilian army, resulting in some infrastructure and a brief period of economic growth.
