Ya Space! This is the name of the work designed by pig design studio. An iconic and meaningful name where you play with the name of the exhibited artist Memphis and the nickname of the city of Memphis which in China is “Cliff Metropolis” (where “Cliff” is “Ya” in Chinese).

“A playful art gallery, which saves the monotonous city with its anti-rational humor”: these are the words with which Li Wenqiang, the founder of Pig Design.

The PIG DESIGN Project is designed and designed to house Memphis objects, works, and objects of the Italian movement of the 80s, located in the halls of Ya Space! also drawn as a Memphis object, in an overabundant set of signs and geometries that give the building the image of a real postmodern triumph.

Hangzhou’s showroom is an ironic architecture, a boisterous mini-monument that screams its presence in the city, intentionally emphasizing the ambiguity between container and content. A building that, with its conceptual and material “lightness”, comes to the eye more like a temporary pavilion than as a lasting architecture, but undoubtedly with all the power and iconicity of a great job.

Ya Space! interiors

In the halls of Ya Space! many symmetrical compositions add up and intersect, multiplying escape points in a sought-after visual confusion. The PIG DESIGN showroom is divided into two floors that break down and compose in mosaics of surfaces articulated at different altitudes to compose and configure themselves in a sequence of stages for the works of Memphis; that in this architecture is honored by the updated proposition of his vision and artistic research, aesthetic triumph based on the rejection of minimalism.

The architectural and artistic composition of the interior emphasizes and echoes the sudden sensory experiences that Memphis furnishings bring to people, effectively conveying their breathtaking feeling. Fundamental to the achievement of the goal is the set of geometric shapes in free composition combined with carefully studied shades, textures, and illuminations.

Ya Space! facade

Pig DESIGN’s building cladding deserves attention. Here the cladding again alludes to the pun related to the exhibitor, in fact right in the façade we find allusions to the “Cliff City” (the name by which Memphis is known in China).

This somewhat pretentious connection is an opportunity to draw a shell of great effect.

The facade is covered in angular corrugated stainless steel sheets, therefore, recalls the cliff typical of the American city, the façade is modeled by proposing corners, facets, and protrusions that are masterfully emphasized by the choice of the metal sheet casing with triangular panels.

The light breaking on the paneling of the façade creates beautiful reverberation effects that give the building new faces depending on the angle from which it is observed; in contrast to this the front door attracts the observer because of its peculiarity, an orange circle recessed and highlighted by the shadow of its entrances guides patrons towards a world completely different from that suggested by the external appearance of Ya Space!
