Since Zürich served as the Federal capital from 1839 to 1840, the Conservative party’s victory there in 1839 generated considerable controversy throughout Switzerland. But when the Radicals seized back control of Zürich, which served as the Federal capital from 1845 to 1846, the city led the charge against the Sonderbund cantons. Zürich voted in favour of the Federal constitutions of 1848 and 1874 after the Sonderbund conflict and the founding of the Swiss Federal State. Large-scale immigration from rural areas into the town starting in the 1830s gave rise to an industrial class that, despite being “settled” there, did not have the rights of a burgher and, as a result, had no voice in the local government.
