The Local Administration Act of 1972’s provisions, which were part of a local government reform in England, led to the borough’s formation on April 1, 1974. The county boroughs of Huddersfield and Dewsbury, the municipal boroughs of Batley and Spenborough, and the urban districts of Colne Valley, Denby Dale, Heckmondwike, Holme Valley, Kirkburton, Meltham, and Mirfield were among the eleven previous local government areas that were merged. Before settling on Kirklees, the combining councils considered more than fifty names, including Upper Agbrigg, Brigantia, and Wooldale. It was given the name Kirklees Priory, which is located halfway between Huddersfield and Dewsbury and is thought to be where Robin Hood was interred.
