The region surrounding Arkhangelsk was known to the Vikings as Bjarmaland. Around 890, Ohthere of Hlogaland described his travels through a populated area near a river and the White Sea. This likely is where Arkhangelsk first appeared. Thorir Hund’s Vikings, according to Snorri Sturluson, plundered this region in 1027. By the mouth of the Dvina, near modern-day Arkhangelsk, local agricultural labourers discovered an awe-inspiring silver treasure in 1989. The artefacts inside were likely buried at the start of the 12th century and might have been up to 200 years old at the time.
