A few Germanic tribes held on in swampy regions near the eastern banks of the Rhine as the Roman Empire consolidated its control over all of Europe. There were a few farming or fishing settlements at the confluence of the tiny river Düssel and the Rhine in the 7th and 8th centuries. Such towns served as the foundation for the development of Düsseldorf. In the local Low Rhenish dialect, Düsseldorf (then known as Dusseldorp) first appeared in writing in 1135. Kaiserswerth, a little village north of Düsseldorf, was fortified under Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, and soldiers stationed there kept a close eye on all activity on the Rhine. In 1929, Kaiserswerth finally moved into the Düsseldorf suburbs. The Counts of Berg took over control of Düsseldorf in 1186. One of the most significant events in Düsseldorf’s history occurred on August 14, 1288. The settlement on the banks of the Düssel received town rights on this day from the ruling Count Adolf VIII of Berg. Before it, the Count of Berg and the Archbishop of Cologne engaged in a brutal power war culminating in the Battle of Worringen.
