Simbirsk withstood a month-long siege in 1668 from a 20,000-strong force under the command of the Cossack rebel commander Stenka Razin. Yemelyan Pugachev, a second country rebel, was imprisoned in Simbirsk before being put to death. Simbirsk possessed a wooden kremlin, which was destroyed by a fire during the 18th century. Simbirsk quickly lost its strategic significance as the eastern frontier of the Russian Empire was quickly pushed into Siberia, but it nonetheless started to grow into a significant regional town. In 1796, Simbirsk received city status.
