The Ryazan prince Yaropolk escaped “to Voronezh” after losing the fight and was moving “from town to town” there in 1177, which is the year when the word “Voronezh” first appears in a chronicle. According to historical and archaeological evidence, the Voronezh River (a tributary of the Don) and several localities are identified as part of the territory of Voronezh. A remarkable Slavic town-planning complex from the early eighth to the early eleventh centuries, which included the present-day city of Voronezh and its surroundings, was found in the river’s lower reaches (about 42 km long, about 13 forts and many unfortified villages). Most old towns were abandoned by the 12th and 13th centuries, but new communities started to arise upstream, towards Ryazan.
