Belgrade’s architectural legacy is well maintained in terms of the number of buildings and the appearance date. The development of history and a particular geographic setting, which saw repeated battles and destructions, did not favour the longevity and preservation of the structures. The majority of them only date back to the 19th century because of this. Except for the Belgrade fortification, little is known about the architecture of medieval Belgrade. Buildings during the Turkish administration exhibited every aspect of Islamic architecture. Most public structures were mosques, serais, caravan-serais, tekijas, and medressas.
