Following a city-county merger in 2003, Louisville’s borders have been the same as those of Jefferson County. The Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government, abbreviated to Louisville Metro, is the official name of this merged city-county government. Despite the merger and rebranding, the term “Jefferson County” is still used in some instances to refer to Louisville Metro, mainly when referring to the incorporated communities outside of the “balance” that makes up Louisville proper. As of the 2020 census, the city’s total consolidated population was 782,969. However, the total population of 633,045 is given in most publications and national rankings, as it excludes other incorporated places and semiautonomous towns within the county.
