Paleo-Indians, known to have been in southern Arizona some 12,000 years ago, were likely the first to explore the Tucson area. A hamlet site dating from 2100 BC was discovered during recent archaeological digs near the Santa Cruz River. The Santa Cruz River floodplain was intensively farmed during the Early Agricultural Period (c. 1200 BC to AD 150). They hunted, foraged for wild vegetables and nuts, and ate corn, beans, and other crops produced with irrigation canals they built. Tucson’s settlement during the Early Ceramic period witnessed the first widespread use of pottery pots for cooking and storage. The Hohokam tribe of people lived in the area from 600 to 1450 AD and were notable for their extensive irrigation canal networks and red-on-brown pottery.
