The first people to be recorded in Colorado Springs were the Utes, Arapaho, and Cheyenne. The current city area was assigned as part of the 1854 Kansas Region, which was part of the territory included in the United States’ 1803 Louisiana Purchase. It became part of the Jefferson Territory on October 24, 1859, and El Paso County on November 28, 1859, after the first local community was created. During the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, Colorado City was “officially incorporated on August 13, 1859”, near the confluence of Fountain and Camp creeks on the Front Range. It served as the capital of the Colorado Territory from November 5, 1861, to August 14, 1862, when it was relocated to Golden and Denver.
