Don Tomás Sánchez Barrera built the Spanish colonial village of Villa de San Agustin de Laredo in 1755, while the area was part of the Nuevo Santander region of the Spanish province of New Spain. In honour of Saint Augustine of Hippo, the Villa de San Agustin de Laredo was named after Laredo, Cantabria, Spain. Laredo was the capital of the independent Republic of the Rio Grande in 1840, which was established in opposition to Antonio López de Santa Anna; it was forced back into Mexico. The Texas Rangers occupied the town in 1846 during the Mexican–American War. The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo gave the land to the United States after the war.
