Spaniard Alonso Alvarez de Pineda called the semitropical bay Corpus Christi, in Texas, on the day of the holy Feast of Corpus Christi in 1519. Orobio y Basterr was the first European to explore the Corpus Christi Bay in 1747. José de Escandón organized a colony of around 50 families to settle at the mouth of the bay a few years later, but it was short-lived. Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney and William P. Aubrey founded Kinney’s Trading Post, or Kinney’s Ranch, in 1839, as Corpus Christi’s first permanent colony. It was a modest trading post where supplies were sold to a Mexican revolutionary army positioned about 25 miles (40 kilometres) west. General Zachary Taylor’s men set up camp there in July 1845 in preparation for war with Mexico, and they stayed until March 1846. The settlement was renamed Corpus Christi and incorporated on September 9, 1852, almost a year later.
