Campo Grande began as a little community in 1877, built by farmers José Antônio Pereira and Manoel Vieira de Sousa (a.k.a. Manoel Olivério) who arrived from Minas Gerais just after the Paraguayan War ended. They established Santo Antônio de Campo Grande on the Serra de Maracaju cliffs, at the confluence of two streams named Prosa and Segredo, whose courses currently run parallel to two of the city’s most important avenues. The village’s first church was built by the founder around the end of 1877. The first street, Rua Velha (Old Street), now known as Rua 26 de Agosto, was built by generally aligned homes (26 August Street). This roadway ended, and there is now a square dedicated to the immigrants who later arrived in the city.
