Architects in Goiânia – The notion of establishing a new state capital had been discussed in Goiás from its inception. D. Marcos de Noronha proposed establishing the state capital in the municipality of Pirenópolis in 1753, while José Vieira Couto de Magalhaes proposed relocating the capital to the edge of the Araguaia River in 1863. The need to place the state capital following the state’s economic interests was the driving force behind the relocation efforts. When the economy was focused on gold extraction, Vila Boa (now the City of Goiás) was chosen as the first state capital. The old capital was regarded far later when cattle raising and agriculture came to dominate the state’s development.
