Juan Rejón named the city “Real de Las Palmas” when he founded it on June 24, 1478. Rejón was the commander of the invading Castilian army, which fought the locals. The fight began at the mouth of the Guiniguada ravine when he and his 30 warriors established El Real de Las Palmas, which is now Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Vegueta neighborhood.
The conflict lasted five years and claimed the lives of many people, particularly on the aboriginal side, which lacked the resources to defend itself against the Catholic Monarchs’ army.
