Cartagena, known since the colonial era as Cartagena de Indias, is a city and one of the major ports on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region, bordering the Caribbean sea. It has been the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department since the 18th century. The region was founded by the Carthaginians and boomed during the Roman period. This historical influence is still found in the city’s architecture. It is home to many Roman ruins, including the Casa de la Fortuna, a villa with Roman murals and mosaics.
