Villahermosa is situated between the Yucatan Peninsula and central Mexico near the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the most urban communities in Mexico and the state capital of Tabasco. The region was established in 1519 with the first name of Santa Maria de la Victoria, close to the site of an Olmec settlement. Today, the city is a significant business place for the Mexican oil industry. Laid out definitively on 24 June 1564 by the Spanish Diego de Quijada on the banks of the Grijalva River under the Villa Hermosa, in 1826, the town was raised to the position of the city under the name of San Juan Bautista de la Villa Hermosa. During the French intercession in Mexico, French soldiers were involved in the city in 1863. In 1916, the legislative leader of Tabasco, Francisco J. Múgica requested the rebuilding of the city’s name to Villahermosa.
