Tuxtla Gutiérrez is the capital and the biggest city of the southeastern Mexican territory of Chiapas. The Zoques made the primary pre-Hispanic settlement at the site. They named the valley region Coyatoc, which signifies ‘land or place of hares’. The Aztecs interfered in the area somewhere in 1486 and 1505 and named it Tuchtlan, which implies the same thing in their language. The city is fixated on a huge square called the Plaza Cívica, encircled by government structures such as metropolitan and state government workplaces. On one side of this court is the city’s most significant milestone, the Catedral de San Marcos (Saint Mark’s Cathedral), named after the city’s benefactor holy person, Mark the Evangelist. The town has a few striking parks and other green spaces. The most extensive gallery in the town is the Museo Regional de Antropología e Historia, one of the most significant in Mexico.
