Situated in Southern Poland, Bytom is perhaps one of the largest and oldest industrial cities in the coal region of Upper Silesia. Bytom’s origins can be dated back to the 11th century, where it was under the rule of King Bolesław I. Its primal economic base in the 12th century was through lead and silver mines. In the 12th century, the town was held by Silesia and under various central European powers for several centuries that followed. In the mid-18th century, when the city was passed on to Germany, it was the only city to have a Polish secondary school/ gymnasium in Germany designed by the architects in Bytom and was later the center of operations for the Polish underground in World War II. Post the second world war, Bytom transformed into a center for heavy industry. The main industrial works that occurred were that of integrated iron & steelworks, and the mining of coal, zinc, lead, and silver. However, in the 20th century’s last decade, the heavy industry fell into decline. The city however does boast the presence of the Silesian Opera and the Upper Silesian Museum.
