Located at the southern foot of the wooded Mecsek Mountains, it is approximately 135 miles (220 km) south-southwest of Budapest, Hungary. The site was inhabited by Sopianae, the capital of the province of Southern Pannonia, which succeeded an Illyrian and Celtic settlement. The name Pécs first appeared in the late 11th century. The city has a large main square with a well-preserved mosque (Ghazi Kassim Pasha), which has been converted to a Roman Catholic Church.
Pécs is an old trade and handicrafts city, and in the 14th and 15th centuries, it was a center of humanistic studies. With its Zsolnay ceramics and Turkish ruins, this city attracts visitors interested in history and culture. Despite being Hungary’s fifth-largest city, it lacks an overwhelming sense of bustle. It has become polished and subdued, teeming with architecturally stunning Baroque structures and ancient artistic treasures that made it a 2010 European Capital of Culture along with Essen and Istanbul. Even though the development of the town has suffered several setbacks throughout the centuries, such as Tatar’s invasions of Ottoman rule, it has gone on to become a modern, pleasant town that offers a lot to those wishing to live here or study here. The town is known for its museums, galleries, festivals, and cultural events.
