If you have a noisy garage door, then what should be a simple part of your daily routine has probably become an irritating experience. Some sounds are normal. However, excessive squeaking, rattling, grinding, or banging is usually an indication that things are not working as they should.

With a bit of careful troubleshooting, it is usually a simple task to identify and resolve the issues with automatic garage doors. Dealing with these issues quickly can help to prevent more serious issues later on.

Identify the noise

First, you need to identify what type of noise your garage door is making. If it is a rumbling or grinding sound, then this could indicate that the rollers are worn or that the chain-driver opener needs lubrication. Squeaking is usually a sign of friction between the metal components of the door. Rattling, however, suggests that there is loose hardware. Every noise indicates a different problem, and identifying which one it is can help you to narrow down the cause.

Standing at a safe distance, operate the door and listen closely to work out where the sound originates from. Lack of lubrication is often the most common culprit behind a noisy door. Over time, the metal components of your door can dry out, causing increased friction and creating grinding noises or unpleasant squeaks.

Using a silicone-based lubricant on these moving parts can make a significant difference. You should avoid the use of heavy grease-based products and WD-40, as these can attract dirt or break down any existing lubrication. Once or twice a year, a light, even application can help automatic garage doors run smoothly.

Loose hardware

This is another common cause of noise. Garage doors move up and down hundreds of times and the constant vibration this causes can result in the gradual loosening of brackets, nuts and bolts. If you are hearing a rattling or clattering noise, then something may have worked itself free. Look at all of the visible metal components of your garage door and tighten anything that looks loose, but only if you can reach it safely. In some instances, it may be necessary to get a company who offer garage door maintenance services in to assist.

The rollers

These have a significant role to play when it comes to how quietly a garage door operates. When old metal rollers become misshapen or worn, they can make a harsh noise moving along the tracks. Replacing them with more modern nylon rollers is a popular upgrade that a good garage door company will be happy to carry out for you.

The opener

Chain-drive openers are noisier than belt-drive models and over time, the chain can become loose and slap against the rail. Adjustments to the chain tension can help reduce the noise. If the motor itself is making a humming or grinding sound, then it may be struggling due to wear on the internal components. If this is the case, it is a good idea to seek professional servicing of your garage door opener.

If you have an older model of garage door opener, then it may be noisy as a result of worn components and outdated technology; older models tend to be noisier. If the opener is older, it can be wise to consider upgrading it to something modern; maybe even smartphone compatible! This will reduce the noise but will also offer you something that is more reliable and has better safety features.

Whilst troubleshooting a noisy garage door opener can often be a simple matter of careful observation and a little routine maintenance, this is not always the case. Regular attention will help to keep your garage door and opener running smoothly, but if the symptoms persist, then it may be time to consider calling in the professionals to take a look at it.
