Garages across the country are packed to the rafters of clutter, seasonal items and things that do not have a home anywhere else. As a result, this space is unable to be utilised properly – even for storing your car!

Renovating your garage means you can add a functional space to your home which will help you get more use out of it. It will also add value to your property should you ever come to sell it. Here are some tips for renovating your garage.

Clearing out

Before you can do anything you will need to have a good declutter of your garage. You can sort things into three piles; bin, sell or donate, and keep. You will be able to see whether you have a use for everything as well as any duplicates or broken items.

Once you have reduced the number of things in your garage you can look at organising them properly. You may want to have a specific set of shelves that are for tools or holiday items, for example. By keeping everything in clear zones you will be able to find things and put them back with ease.

Redecoration

If your garage is looking a bit tired, a fresh coat of paint can liven up the space. If you choose lighter colours the room will feel brighter which might be important if there are no windows and natural light isn’t coming in.

The floors shouldn’t be neglected either. Check them over for any surface or deeper damage such as scratches and cracks. If there are any, make sure to repair them before moving forward. This will make rearranging and remodelling easier in the long run.

Types of garage

The main purpose of a garage is for people to store and access their vehicles whilst also having space to do any repairs or maintenance on them.

By storing your belongings around the edges of the room you can ensure you have adequate space around your car. You may want to create a workbench specifically for car-related maintenance. Make sure you have a trolley jack to allow you to lift the car properly when it comes to changing tyres.

Other garage conversions

If you don’t own a car or do not carry out maintenance on your personal vehicle, you could always transform the garage into something else.

For households with frequent visitors, turning that space into a self-contained guest suite could be the way forward. Whilst your guests can enter the main house through the side door, allowing you and them to have privacy will make for a relaxed visit.

Many people dream of having a games room and a garage is a popular space to realise that dream. Alternatively, gym-goers can have a workout space at home, reducing the need for expensive gym memberships and making it easy to get in a quick session.
