Growing up in our Indian family, certain scenes are just etched in my memory. The comforting aroma of my mom’s special garam masala, the peaceful sound of my grandfather’s morning prayers, and the sight of my grandmother, Nani, getting ready for a wedding or a temple visit.

She would look so graceful in her silk sarees, her hair neatly tied, but her smile would falter as she slipped her feet into her old footwear. She’d say, “Beta, to look good, you have to be a little uncomfortable,” and I’d watch her wince with every step, her feet swelling by the end of the day.

For years, I accepted her words as a kind of wisdom, a universal truth about getting older. But deep down, I always wondered: what if she didn’t have to choose between looking good and feeling good? What if there were a way to have both? That thought became a mission for me, one that finally led me to a good pair of black sandals for women over 60.

The Foot-ageing Problem and the Perfect Solution

To understand why I felt so strongly about finding her the right footwear, you have to understand what ageing does to our feet. It’s something we don’t think about until it affects someone we love. For Nani, a lifetime of standing in the kitchen, walking to the market, and taking part in family ceremonies had taken its toll.

Her feet, once strong, were now tired and achy. The natural fat padding that cushions the soles of our feet thins out over time, making every hard surface feel unforgiving. The joints and ligaments can also stiffen and weaken, which puts extra strain on the arches. And for many elders in India, swelling is a constant issue, especially after a long day.

All of these issues meant that her old, unsupportive sandals were doing more harm than good. They weren’t providing the foundational support her feet desperately needed. They weren’t absorbing shock, and they certainly weren’t accommodating the natural changes her feet were going through. I knew the solution had to address these specific problems, and that’s a nice pair of black sandals for women by my favourite brand, Birkenstock!

The Beginning: A Gift of Comfort

I decided to surprise Nani on her birthday with a pair. After some research, I chose the classic two-strap Arizona in a versatile black. I was a bit nervous; would she think they were too modern for her?

Too casual for a woman who has worn only traditional footwear for decades? When I presented the box to her, she looked at the sandals with a mix of curiosity and doubt. “These are very different, beta,” she said, her expression a little hesitant.

But I urged her to try them on. The moment her feet touched the insole, I saw a flicker of surprise in her eyes. It was a small but significant moment. The hesitation in her voice faded as she took a few steps inside the house. It was the first time I had seen her walk without that familiar wince in a very long time.

The Secret Ingredient: The Soft Footbed

So, what changed her mind? The answer, I quickly realised, was in the foundation of the shoe itself. For a generation that often dismisses new trends, the value of this footwear brand lies not in its fashion appeal but in its ergonomic design.

The core of every pair is its famous soft footbed. It’s a carefully crafted, supportive system made from natural cork and latex. As Nani wore them, I could see how the footbed was molding to her unique foot shape, providing custom support she never knew she needed. The deep heel properties of the footbed directly addressed the loss of her natural foot padding, making every step feel softer and less punishing on her soles.

The adjustable straps on the Arizona also played a big part; she could tighten or loosen them to get the perfect fit, which is crucial for comfort throughout the day as feet naturally swell. This feature alone made her daily life so much easier.

A New Chapter: The Perfect Pair for Every Occasion

Soon, Nani started asking about other styles. “They’re so comfortable, maybe I can find something a bit dressier?” she asked, a spark in her eye.

Considering it was my maternal aunt’s engagement, I had to find the correct black sandals that supported her arthritis as well. I doubled down on the Gizeh black sandals then. It was perfect!

In black, it looked stunning with her salwar suit, proving that a comfort-focused sandal could be both stylish and suitable for any occasion. Lowkey, very proud of myself. So much so that I could not stop myself from trying them as well (of course, if they belong to my Nani, I have a right over them too).

The Gizeh also has the same amazing soft footbed and an adjustable strap, so she didn’t have to compromise on the support that had become so essential for her. The best part is that black sandals for women her age, who value both tradition and comfort, are finally available in styles that are both beautiful and supportive.

The joy on her face now, when she gets ready, is priceless. There’s no more wincing, no more tired sighs. The footwear gave her back the freedom to be active and to live fully.

Thanking the Ones Whose Fables Made us Human

The best part is, there isn’t a single word she’s said about her feet. It’s the little things. It’s watching her walk up the temple stairs without any worries. It’s seeing her stand for a family photo, smiling from ear to ear, with no thought to her sandals.

She’ll wear her black sandals, and her feet just slip into them with ease. And for a granddaughter who just wanted her Nani to be comfortable, that’s all I ever needed to see.

This isn’t just about comfortable shoes. On a larger level, it’s about giving our elders back their freedom and their joy. It’s our way of saying, “Thank you for every step you’ve ever taken for us.” Side note, I think maybe now she’ll make my favourite laddoos a bit more often!
