You were advised to start saving for retirement as early as possible, and you took this advice seriously. Now, you think you have enough money for a comfortable retirement, and you’re looking forward to it. But there’s one thing: you’re not sure what enjoying a comfortable retirement looks like.

Is it about being happy and staying active? Is it about moving to a great retirement home so you don’t have to worry about daily household chores? These tips will help you figure out how to live comfortably as a retiree.

Choose the right retirement home

If you’re thinking about moving to a retirement home, make sure you choose the right one. Ideally, you should start looking for the perfect retirement home before you’re ready to retire. Start by listing your needs and what you want in a retirement home. Which amenities are necessary to you, and which would be nice?

Then, research different retirement homes where you would like to live. Consider touring a few of them to compare your options and decide which will be the most comfortable for you.

Improve your financial literacy

Improving your financial literacy before you retire is always a good idea. Why? Because you might find that it’s more difficult to manage your finances as a retiree than as a full-time or part-time worker.

When you retire, you will have to consider different sources of income. You might have a pension, a Registered Retirement Savings Plan, a Tax-Free Savings Account, and perhaps a few other types of investments.

To make the most of your money, you need to understand how each of your sources of retirement income works and their withdrawal rules.

Don’t overspend your money

An important part of living comfortably as a retiree is living within your means. Improving your financial literacy is also about knowing how much you can spend each month. You probably don’t want to end up overspending your money and having to take a part-time job so you can make ends meet.

Once you know how much you can comfortably spend each month, spend it. You’ve spent years saving for retirement; now, the time has come to use those savings.

Don’t forget to pamper yourself

To live comfortably as a retiree, it’s important to pamper yourself occasionally. Sure, you could travel abroad or cruise worldwide if this is what you’ve been dreaming of for years. But you can still take fun day trips if you don’t have the budget for luxury vacations.

Eat in a fancy restaurant even when you don’t have any special occasion to celebrate. Go to the movies, to the spa, or to a museum. Don’t overspend but do spend money on yourself. You deserve it.

Make your health a priority

To enjoy a comfortable retirement, prioritize your health and schedule regular health checks. Eat regular meals, and choose healthy snacks. Drink plenty of water and do your best to sleep well each night.

Ideally, you should physically exercise for at least 150 minutes each week. If this seems like a lot, remember that any exercise you do is better than none. You must also keep your mind active by learning new skills or playing brain games.

Be sure to spend time in nature, whether going to the beach or walking in a beautiful park. Fresh air is beneficial for both your physical and mental health.

Plan your schedule carefully

You might realize that you live more comfortably and purposefully if you follow a certain routine. As a retiree, you won’t have to get up early to go to work anymore. But you should still get up and sleep roughly the same time each day.

It will be up to you to add fun activities to your schedule to make sure you never have time to get bored. Volunteer, take a class, go out with friends, or reconnect with an old hobby.

Try to expand your circle of friends

Finally, remember that your retirement will be more enjoyable if you have friends to spend time with. But if all your friends are people you meet at work, they won’t have as much free time as you will when you retire.

The solution is to meet new people to expand your circle of friends. Chat with your neighbours to get to know them, or meet people who share your interests by joining a club.
