There is no denying it;  here in the UK, we certainly find ourselves and our properties facing a wide range of different elements, and often several in the same day. This can take its toll on the exterior of your property and your garage door is no exception. If you want to ensure that your garage door continues to look its best for as long as possible then it is important to make sure that you are protecting it against the elements.

Read on as we look at a number of ways in which you can do this.

Buy a good quality garage door

The first step towards ensuring that your garage door is protected against the elements is to ensure that you purchase a good quality garage door in the first place. Whether this is a sectional garage door, an up and over garage door or a roller door, choosing something from a manufacturer with a good reputation for quality will help to make sure that it will last. It can be a false economy to assume that a cheaper garage door, one that is on the flimsy side, will last you just as well as something that costs more.

Most homeowners want a garage door that is sturdy, durable and has a protective coating on its exterior that will protect it against the cold and the wet.

Maintain your garage door

If you want to keep your garage door looking good for as long as possible then you need to ensure that you are maintaining it properly against the elements. If you have a wooden garage door then you should be mindful that both cold and wet weather can do damage over time. Damp can get into the wood and when this gets colder it will expand, damaging the integrity of the material of your garage door.

It can be a good idea to give your garage door a thorough clean at least once a year and check for any signs of damage. This will allow you to prevent any issues from getting worse. In the case of a wooden door you will probably need to treat it every year to keep it looking good and to prevent it becoming damaged further.

In the case of a metal door, these are often treated to protect them against the elements. However, a good clean and a check at least once a year is a wise move. If there is some damage, then it can be a good idea to treat it. If you are not sure what is the best way to do this then it may be a good idea to contact your garage door supplier as they will be able to help you. If you don’t want to do this yourself, some window cleaners offer this as an extra service.

Insulated garage doors

Rain is just one of the elements you may find yourself battling against. The cold can also be damaging to garage doors, in particular some of its components. Whilst the winter can often be relatively mild in the UK it isn’t worth taking a risk. Having an insulated garage door can help to keep the cold out and ensure that the working mechanisms of your garage door do not become affected. If the cold does get to them then you may need to contact the company who fitted your garage door as you may need repairs or even replacement parts. That way, you can ensure that your door works correctly and more importantly, that it is still safe to use.
