‏‏‎ ‎Teaching methodology

In this interactive course, the participants would be introduced to Evidence-based design for Sustainability using Computational Tools. The participants would learn how to think algorithmically using Grasshopper. They would also learn concepts of Building Physics and Passive strategies by ‘learning by doing’ methodology. It would be a mix of lectures, demonstrations, assignments, group activity, and doubt clearing sessions.

The final capstone project would be a group activity where they would use what they have learnt in the course to design an Energy Efficient Building. Tools to be used: Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug, Honeybee and Climate Consultant.

What is Environmental Analysis in the context of Built Environment?

Environmental Analysis is an Evolving Design Paradigm in Built Environment which investigates environmental factors like Sun-positions, Temperature, Humidity, Noise, Precipitation, Wind, etc to come up with data-informed or evidence-based design strategies, so that Buildings are more Energy-Efficient, Resource-efficient and Sustainable. Such evaluations would also ensure comfort (Daylight Comfort, Thermal Comfort, Acoustic Comfort, Glare reduction, etc) and well-being of the inhabitants.

What is Computational Environmental Analysis?

The Building Designers had been using such analysis for ages mostly using their past experiences and thumb rules and intuitions. These analyses often used to be erroneous as they were not backed by definitive data and would turn out to be really costly mistakes for the project. But today with the increase and adoption of computation power we can perform simulations and data-intensive analyses to arrive at Data-driven design solutions. Today, Computational tools and techniques have automated or expedited such Analyses making Sustainable High-Performance Buildings possible.
