Architect Heidi Richardson was commissioned to update and fully remodel this 3,600-sf shingle-style residence near downtown Mill Valley, Calif.

Architect:  Heidi Richardson
Country: United States

After numerous additions over the years, the family was ready for a major spatial re-configuration, which included heightening the ceilings and opening the floor plan. The top two floors sat on a basement without quite enough headroom. As a result, the new residence dug down to gain headroom and carefully restored the remaining structure.

The interiors were refreshed with a casual, sophisticated feel, incorporating dark wood floors, crisp white walls and neutral furnishings.

The exterior boasts warm brown shingles that are highlighted with tudor detailing. Although not on an historic property list, the house stands on a prominent corner of Town and politically needed to retain the look of the neighborhood as it was updated for current, more relaxed lifestyles.
