The project brief required the designer to design the interiors of Sunshine Apartments’ fifth storey in South Bombay. The Art Deco aesthetic permeates the building, which was built in the 1920s. In order to maintain the house as useful for the client as possible, it was also redesigned in an Art Deco style.

A subtle floor pattern, an oak backdrop with subtle flutes, and a closet area open the entrance foyer. A mirror barrier that opens into the dining area is further forward and is roofed with a similar ribbed pattern. Twin columns with Ionic capitals support the open balcony, and the art deco grill has been meticulously restored to its former grandeur.
The brass door handles, knobs, keyholes, and carpentry elements are custom made throughout the house. To fit a waving wall, the artwork was particularly commissioned. The carpet was removed, leaving just a border along the patterned floors. The window frames were strengthened and given a staggered wood appearance by padding them up. Curtains were completely abandoned. In the den, they took an artwork and put it on a sliding panel which works as a sliding window.
With their different wood finishes offering a subtle texture and depth, the wooden screens in traditional geometric designs serve as partitions to turn private rooms into an open and flowing public space. The enclosed balcony can also be used as a study to read, watch TV, think, or simply take in the breathtaking scenery.
